Kitchen Chimney Vs Exhaust Fan:-

So now this question may arise: Does a chimney really necessary for every kitchen? Or Can’t exhaust fan do the same job as the chimney do?

These questions generally arise in mind, let me explain you one by one

  1. The exhaust fan can fulfil your purpose by some extent if you attach the exhaust fan at the ceiling just above your stove, instead of walls for better performance.
  2. Exhaust fans ventilate the gases/smoke, but gases/smoke are there for some few seconds before it exhausted.
  3. Exhaust fans are not capable to exhaust heavy particles, like oil.
  4. Just because exhaust fans are not instantaneous, chances are some smoke may spread outside the kitchen.

So the answer is NO, exhaust fans are just cheap alternative of kitchen chimneys.

Now, why is chimney necessary for every kitchen.

Different Types of kitchen chimneys

1. Wall mounted Chimneys:

As the name described, these chimneys are installed adjacent to the wall of the kitchen. These chimneys are required if your stove is adjacent to the wall of the kitchen.

2. Ceiling or island chimneys:

These chimneys are suitable for those kitchens where stove placement is somewhere away from the walls. They are available with duct or ductless.

3. Auto-clean chimneys:

These chimneys have a feature over conventional type of chimneys is the auto clean features. In chimneys the cleaning is the tedious task, so to make this task easy one can go with auto clean chimneys. Auto clean chimneys available as wall mounted or island type chimneys.

Best chimneys for Indian kitchens:- How to choose?

I am listing the most important deciding factors which is very crucial while buying a kitchen chimney.

1. Location of the chimney:

So the first deciding factor before buying a chimney for the kitchen is based on your gas stove location. It means whether you required a wall-mounted chimney or ceiling/island type chimney.

2. Size of Kitchen:

The second important factor is the size of your kitchen, if your kitchen is small then choose accordingly, don’t choose based on the latest trend, keep the size of your kitchen before deciding the chimney for the kitchen.

The basic thumb rule is 60cm width chimney is sufficient if you have 2 or 4 burner stove.

For more than 4 burner stove go with 90cm width chimney. This is just a thumb rule, the best practice is to measure your stove width before choosing a chimney.

3. Suction Capacity:-

the Suction capacity of a chimney required is directly correlated to the size of the kitchen. Kitchen with small in size and choosing higher suction capacity chimney is a waste of power and money, So choose wisely.

The suction capacity of the chimney should be 10m3/hr to keep the fresh air circulation in the kitchen. Ex- Suppose your kitchen volume is 60m3  (LxBxH= 4mx5mx3m), then the required suction capacity will be 600 m3/hr. Just multiply the volume of the kitchen with 10 to get the suction capacity of chimney required.

4. Filters:-

Filters in the chimney are most generally available in 3 types. Filters are used to clean the air and make it fresh and odour free.

4.1 Cassette Filter-

These filters are made of stocked aluminium mesh. Small gaps between the mesh allow the air to pass. Over time the oil clogged the mesh of the chimney and it reduces the suction power of chimney. So for that, you have to clean the filter periodically.

4.2 Baffle Filter:-

Baffle filter is made of multiple curved aluminium panels through which air passes. These filters are best for Indian cooking, because of the space between the curved panels are more, though these panels also get dirty with time it will not impact the suction power of kitchen chimney.

4.3 Carbon filter:-

These filters are made up of charcoal, these filters are used especially to absorb bad odour from your kitchen, oil and grease also clogged these filters, so one need to replace these filters every six months or depends on the usage.

5. Auto Clean Chimneys:

There are two types of chimneys available in the market, the latest trend is the auto clean type because cleaning of the chimney is a tedious task, they are costlier than conventional chimneys, the best-having edge over conventional chimneys.

How auto clean Chimney Works-

As the name defines its definition by itself, these chimneys have a feature which helps to reduce or avoid the chimney cleaning manually.

Actually, the air contained oil particles are trapped in oil collecting bowl inside the chimney, so all oil particles are blown towards this container by the blower. So you just have to empty this oil collection container once it gets filled and attache this again.

But these chimneys are not full auto clean, it means after some time maybe in 2-3 years you need to clean the chimney filter as some oil particle may be deposited over time. But actually, these chimneys are very much saved your time.

6. Duct and Ductless Chimneys:

Some houses have constrained to place the duct type chimneys in their kitchens, it could be because of neighbours house behind the kitchen wall or in apartments with no rooftop, so to avoid these constraints we require ductless chimneys.

Difference between the duct and ductless chimneys:- Chimney with duct exhaust the kitchen air to the environment through the duct pipe, these type of chimneys are inexpensive in terms of operating cost. These chimneys even exhaust the kitchen heat which makes the kitchen cooler. But they have some cons like you have to make an opening in your wall or on the roof for the duct pipe. The duct pipe may not look good inside the kitchen and may dent your kitchen looks.

On the other ductless chimneys uses mostly carbon filters, which retain everything and clean the air, and this clean air then again released inside the kitchen. The operation cost of these chimneys is more than the duct type chimneys because of the replacement of the carbon filter which clogged due to oil particles. These chimneys are costly as well as very few of them available in the Indian market

So based on these factors choose your chimney type. To ease your work I am listing here best of the kitchen chimneys available in the Indian market.
